St Michael’s Catholic School Financial Literacy Wall Art
Financial Literacy is essential for preparing young people for adult financial responsibility.
It is already a component of the UK’s Secondary School curriculum. And Financial Literacy is set to become statutory for the Primary School curriculum by 2028.
CEO of charity Young Enterprise, Sarah Porretta, says: “We see financial education as not just a subject but a life skill. It’s very difficult to navigate the world as an adult if you don’t have that financial literacy.”
With this in mind, St Michael’s Catholic School were keen to reinforce the importance of financial literacy to pupils. So they invested in a bespoke Wall Art project for the school’s stairwells.
Financial Literacy
Budgeting and saving, and understanding debt and interest rates are important as children mature into young adults. Beyond school, they’ll need to earn and manage their own money. And financial literacy is a skill that will help them enjoy financial independence, wherever life takes them after school.
St Michael’s Catholic School were keen to begin that journey. So they approached us to design a bespoke Wall Art project that would inform and engage pupils in this subject.
We worked closely with school leaders to understand which elements and terminology they wanted to include. Then we combined their vision with our design expertise to create bespoke artwork against the brief.
A financial journey
The school opted to feature their Wall Art on the walls of the stairwells. This was a clever choice for a few reasons. Firstly, stairwells are often regarded as a ‘problem area’ by schools. They require regular maintenance as they’re an area of heavy footfall. But they tend to be awkward to paint and maintain. So Wall Art is a long-lasting, zero maintenance alternative.
Secondly, we’re able to create the designs to fit the direction of travel. So we can take pupils on a visual journey through the designs. As pupils walk up and down the stairs, they’ll be able to engage with the Wall Art and absorb the information – without even realising they’re learning.
In this way, this stairwell Wall Art makes learning accessible to all and brings visual interest to a previously unused or unloved area of the school.
Bespoke design
Schools use Wall Art to solve a myriad of problems and achieve multiple goals. This Financial Literacy Wall Art design shows how to make learning engaging, fun and accessible. So pupils can understand the content and feel a desire to find out more.
We chose the colour backdrop carefully so it creates the perfect level of stimulation for pupils. It’s bright enough to capture attention, without overwhelming the senses or distracting pupils from their day. A pastel colour palette and large, accessible images bring the design to life.
We used hand drawn characters, rather than photos of people. This softens the subject matter so it appeals to pupils of all ages.
Our process
When the school contacted us, we set up a free and no obligation site visit to begin the process. We visited and met with the relevant team members to understand the brief and what they wished to achieve.
From there, we put together a quote based on the scope of work required. Once the school were happy to proceed, we guided them through our design process. After making tweaks to the initial artwork, the school approved the designs. We printed and installed the Wall Art in the school’s stairwells, ensuring meticulous attention to detail for a perfect end result.
We’re delighted with the end result and are confident that pupils will engage with the designs as they embark on their journeys towards financial independence.
