Schools use immersive Wall Art for a number of reasons. Typically, they’re keen to spark curiosity and provide a calm and mindful space for pupils.
But the benefits reach far beyond that. In fact, immersive designs can impact many aspects of pupils’ wellbeing and learning.
Read on to find out tha six ways that immersive Wall Art can benefit schools…
Imagine walking through a school corridor that transports you to a different world. You might enter a lush rainforest or dive underwater into the depths of the ocean. The walls are adorned with lush, natural scenery and creatures that greet you as you make your way along the corridor.
You may even see images on the ceilings, windows and doors around you for a fully captivating effect.
This is immersive Wall Art at its best. It’s a captivating design style that brings a totally different world to your walls.
Common themes for immersive Wall Art include nature, rainforests, underwater, woodlands, deserts and even space.
Curiosity is an essential ingredient for learning. Children need to be excited and engaged in a subject in order to apply themselves and pay attention.
An immersive design immediately sparks curiosity by bringing children into the world on display. Plus, the size and scale of the designs make it impossible to ignore.
When we design immersive walls for schools, we try to add little unexpected details throughout each piece. This invites pupils to get closer to the walls and discover hidden treasures.
For example; tiny insects hidden in a rainforest or an unexpected sea creature hiding behind a rock. This is where bespoke design really pays off. Our experienced design team can tailor artwork to each school’s unique preferences – so every piece is one of a kind!
Visual learners and sensory seeking pupils respond particularly well to immersive designs.
Pupils are often drawn to the wall and want to look closely at it, and even touch it, to engage fully with the content. Many of the schools we work with use their immersive walls as a backdrop for lessons.
Teachers may bring pupils to sit alongside a nature wall and ask them to engage their senses so they’re alert and engaged for the lesson.
Pupils can use their imaginations to discuss what the environment might sound like or smell like. In this way, pupils can enjoy a full sensory experience and grow an awareness of their bodies.
We’ve worked in education for over two decades. And, we’re delighted that wellbeing has become a dominant priority for most schools.
Many schools approach us asking for ideas to create calm spaces for pupils. They may wish to designate a calm room or space where pupils can regulate. Or they may want to create an immersive wall in a corridor or stairwell so all pupils can enjoy the calming benefits of rainforests, underwater, woodlands, deserts or space.
We know that immersive nature walls in particular are proven to boost wellbeing and create a positive learning environment.
Calm, happy and healthy children achieve better learning outcomes. So, when schools invest in immersive walls for their buildings, they’re indirectly investing in their attainment levels too.
Many schools also ask us to include facts about nature within their immersive artwork.
For example, we can add in stats about climate change, facts about the environment and tips on how to reduce carbon footprints. This boosts learning further, and can motivate and empower students to become more conscious and responsible future citizens.
It’s a case of showing rather than telling – immersive Wall Art informs and inspires pupils in a powerful way.
One of our all time favourite immersive design projects is this incredible Egyptian cloakroom. We created the designs bespoke for New Invention Junior School in Walsall.
What we love most about this project is that it transformed a simple cloakroom into a world of wonder!
Pupils can wander through ancient Egypt as they hang up their coats and bags, delving into the culture of a different country. They may feel inspired to learn more about Africa, or explore other continents, countries and cultures and their rich histories.
A quote on this immersive wall says; “replace fear of the unknown with curiosity“. And that’s exactly what the design inspires pupils to do!
Immersive Wall Art gets pupils talking. They cannot help but exclaim their wonder and delight at the designs, and discuss these with their peers.
Schools tell us that immersive designs are a natural conversation starter for pupils. Often, teachers need not even start the discussion. Pupils are instantly engaged and want to express their thoughts and opinions on what they can see.
As pupils wander alongside these natural worlds on their walls, they can discuss and share what’s in front of them. This builds vocabulary in pupils of all ages and can create a sense of belonging among pupils too.
