We designed Wall Art for Crowdys Hill School.

Crowdys Hill School supports pupils with SEND in Swindon. The school’s motto is ‘Learning for Life’. They believe learning should not stop due to age, ability or achievements and are a caring, inclusive and aspirational community.

We designed an immersive ocean scene for the school, using the walls, floors and ceilings to create an awe-inspiring effect. The design creates a sensory-friendly space where pupils can reset and receive the input they need. Nature serves as the perfect backdrop in this immersive design. Research shows that spending time in nature can boost mental health and wellbeing. So the ocean scene will lift spirits and create a wholly positive environment for pupils.

Sensory-friendly design

This space is a physiotherapy room for the SEND students that attend the school. Many of the students at the school needed physiotherapy 3 or 4 times a week. So, despite all the required equipment, it was important that this space not feel like a hospital room, but be calming and tranquil.

Due to the types of exercises and activities that take place, some students would spend the bulk of their time lying down, either on their front or back. So instead of just designing for the walls, we created a full immersive theme.

The designs covered the floor, ceiling, and even windows, meaning that no matter where a student was looking, there was always something to see.

Outcomes and Impact

There’s a real sense of purpose to this Wall Art design. We needed to take a few factors into account when creating the artwork. For example; how pupils used the room, what they would see in various positions and how we worked around existing features and equipment.

This is where our design team’s experience and expertise really shone through. They worked with the brief from the school, considered the objectives they wished to achieve and designed for every surface in the room. The end result is a cohesive and immersive design that transports pupils into a dazzling underwater world.

“The Art Work looks amazing and it’s changed the feel of the school. It’s incredible!!” – Crowdys Hill School

Striking a balance

Gentle colours, nature-inspired themes and uncluttered compositions help lower stress levels and create a softer atmosphere. Instead of demanding attention, these designs soothe it.

Pupils at Crowdys Hill can use this space to reflect, reset and develop coping strategies. The sea creatures, shipwrecks and plants offer lots of visual interest. And, using every surface from floor to ceiling makes the entire room feel as if it’s underwater. More than Wall Art, this feels like an underwater world where pupils can escape their ordinary school day and enter a magical world.

Striking the balance between engagement and overstimulation was key for our design team. They were keen to capture attention without overwhelming the senses. Clear layouts, intentional colour choices and strong focal points keep spaces visually calm while still intellectually stimulating.
