That balance became the starting point for the project.
Early conversations with the school were less about “what goes on the walls” and more about how the space should feel. There was a clear desire to create something cohesive. Something that reflects both where the school has come from and where it sits today, grounded in its heritage while creating a strong sense of belonging and pride in Oman.
The ‘Home of Excellence’ wall is striking within the space, using the school’s branding and colour palette to create something that feels both premium and confident.
It brings together the heritage of Downe House through a visual timeline, charting the school’s development over time and reinforcing its strong roots in the UK. It establishes a clear sense of identity that is distinctly Downe House.
The Oman Vision 2040 wall plays a central role in grounding the school within its local context. More than a visual feature, it connects students to the future of Oman, reflecting the country’s ambitions and creating a strong sense of place within the school environment.
As a project closely aligned with the school’s own values, it naturally sits alongside the Downe House DNA woven throughout the space. Together, these elements create a meaningful connection between heritage and place, reinforcing both pride in Oman and a clear sense of identity across the school.
The library space is quieter and more reflective, and the design reflects that, creating a space that feels calm, welcoming and immersive.
The ‘Read, Research, Reflect’ wall helps define the space as one focused on reading and independent study, reinforcing how it is used day to day. Book spines featuring titles relevant to the students create a subtle connection to their own reading, making the space feel familiar and engaging.
The result is a calm and considered environment that supports focus, exploration and time spent within the space, where reading feels naturally embedded into the rhythm of the school day.
As students move into the STEM area, the ‘Women in STEM’ design creates a moment of inspiration along the way.
It highlights influential figures and achievements, helping to broaden perspectives and reinforce a culture of aspiration. The approach is subtle but purposeful, creating a moment that encourages students to see what is possible while feeling relevant to their own journeys. It serves as a clear reminder of the opportunities ahead and the diverse pathways available to students.
Across the wider school, the Downe House DNA starts to appear more consistently. Collaboration, compassion, resilience and creativity are woven into corridors and shared spaces, becoming part of the everyday backdrop rather than confined to one single area.

Even smaller interventions were approached in the same way. In the dining area, a healthy eating pillar introduces messaging around wellbeing and positive choices, showing how even the most functional spaces can contribute to the wider culture of the school.
In the younger year groups, large-scale Oman landscapes bring a strong sense of place into the classrooms. It’s something students connect with immediately, helping them feel part of their surroundings from an early stage.
