Takeley Primary School Library Wall Art
We designed nature inspired Wall Art for Takeley Primary School.
Takeley Primary School has served the children of Essex since 1869.
“The primary purpose of our school is to ensure all our children learn. When children make progress in their learning a sense of achievement and a feeling of satisfaction in a job well done will follow. Enjoyment is a key factor that promotes learning as a lifelong skill that goes beyond just their school days, but supports them well throughout their working lives. Developing together both teamwork and independence is essential to enhance learning, personal and social skills, so that all children one day can play their part in future societies and help shape the world that we will live in.” – Takeley Primary School.
Reading is a core aspect of the school’s curriculum. They are fortunate to offer a dedicated school library to pupils. To enhance the library, the school invested in beautiful, bespoke Wall Art. We used nature as a backdrop in the design, tranforming the area into a magical woodland. Pupils can now enjoy this calm space to read, rest and regulate.
Why school libraries matter
Sadly, one in four Primary Schools in disadvantaged areas of the UK does not have a dedicated library. But, the good news is that it’s possible to promote, encourage and celebrate reading anywhere in your school.
A quiet nook, corridor, school hall or even outdoor space can be used to spark curiosity for reading. And, when children read for pleasure, they enjoy other benefits too. In fact, children who enjoy reading are proven to be happier, healthier and achieve better learning outcomes.
With this in mind, we were delighted to design a beautiful, nature inspired Wall Art project for Takeley Primary School. We included lots of detail and hidden gems within the designs. So, the closer pupils look, the more they’ll discover.
Reading for pleasure
Reading for pleasure thrives in environments that feel human, social and inclusive. Spaces that allow for:
- browsing without pressure
- conversation without judgement
- reading alone or together
- sources of recommendation but without traditional ‘book reviews’
- laughter, silence and shared discovery
It was a treat to bring the school’s vision to life and create this magical, nature inspired, literacy focused design.
‘Enjoyment’ is at the heart of the school’s purpose and aims. So we were keen to create designs that pupils would enjoy looking at, and make the space somewhere pupils wanted to spend time. We’re confident that the school library will encourage many generations of readers for pleasure. And we’re delighted we could play a part in making that happen.
Nature on the walls
Many schools are using nature as a backdrop for their school library. It makes sense…spending time in nature is proven to boost mental health and wellbeing. So, bringing the benefits of nature into a dedicated reading space can do the same.
Nature helps pupils feel calm. And, when pupils can sit in a calm and visually stunning space, whilst enjoying a good book, real magic happens. Pupils can explore the reading space and feel their imaginations soaring. Once they’re in this curious and positive mindset, they’ll be drawn to the stories and books that appeal to them.
Our process
We created this Library Wall Art design bespoke to the school’s requirements and preferences. They put together a brief based on what they wanted to include. For example; the nature setting, quote on the main wall and various objects featured in the design.
We needed to work around existing fixtures and fittings, like doors and walls of varying shapes and sizes. So the Wall Art was designed to perfectly fit the space.
Once the school was happy with their designs, they approved the artwork. We then printed and installed the final designs on the walls. And from there, the visual magic took over!
