We designed a Literacy Stairwell for St Michael’s Catholic School.

A mesmerising, dreamlike design creates intrigue and interest on the walls of St Michael’s Catholic School. We transformed a stairwell with a Literacy Timeline. The Timeline features well known and loved stories, authors and quotes in chronological order.

A collage of images forms the backdrop to the design. And there’s a very diverse collection of books and authors on show. Pupils can walk alongside the design and discover hidden gems that will pique their curiosity. The more pupils engage with the designs, the more they’ll be drawn to the books and stories to find out more. This is an effective way to create a natural interest in reading.

Literary heroes on show

This is a hugely aspirational design as it features famous faces who have made a profound impact on the world. From Marthin Luther King to Malala, we showcased heroes who have used the power of writing to create change.

The Timeline format serves as a learning aid too. Pupils can correlate popular authors and their works to key dates in history. This ties back to the curriculum and adds relevance to the books and stories.

Using a stairwell for the design is a smart choice. The design creates a journey through time as pupils walk up and down the stairs. Stairwells tend to see a lot of footfall and they often need a lot of maintenance. So using Wall Art in this area can reduce maintenance costs because it’s a more sustainable alternative to painting.

St Michael’s Catholic School

Louise Baker is Executive Headteacher at St Michael’s Catholic School. She describes the school as such;

“Our schools are vibrant Catholic communities where children are encouraged to grow, learn and thrive from Nursery right through to Sixth Form. Our mission is simple: to provide an excellent education rooted in Gospel values where our young people can achieve in faith, with love as a community. We want every young person to;

  • discover their unique gifts
  • develop a love of learning
  • feel confident in who they are as a child of God.

Alongside strong academic standards, we place great importance on kindness, respect, and service to others.”

The importance of literacy

Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education says that; “Reading transforms lives, opens doors, fuels imagination and gives every child the chance to succeed, regardless of their background.”

At Promote Your School, we see this every day in our work with schools. We also partner with organisations like National Literacy Trust and BookTrust to support initiatives that fuel literacy. Through our work and partnerships, we continue to encourage reading for pleasure. As this is the key to lifelong learning, happiness and wellbeing.

Literacy Wall Art

Library and Literacy Wall Art brings the life-changing magic of reading to a school’s walls. In this case, we created a Timeline for the school stairwells.

In this way, books come to life in a very natural and organic way. Pupils can engage with the designs in their own time and learn in the way that suits them best. So they’ll be drawn to the stories and authors featured, then be inspired to discover these books to learn more.

And, the more pupils read, the wider their horizons become. Reading can help pupils regulate and reset, feel calmer and happier. And it supports every aspect of learning. So it’s wonderful to see schools investing in literacy Wall Art for their physical environments.

Our process

We create all designs bespoke and in-house. So, no two projects are the same. Just as no two schools are the same! The process begins with a free and no obligation consultation.

We can visit your school to discuss your goals, offer tips and advice and explain our process. You’ll receive a quote for the scope of work you require. And this quote includes all costs upfront – there are no hidden extras at any stage of the process. We’ll guide you through the design process to ensure you get the end result you want. And, we’ll print and install your Wall Art as part of our standard process.

Reading experiences that feel disconnected from their interests, identities or real lives do not develop a love for reading. When reading is aligned with passion, curiosity and choice, engagement follows.

That’s why reading culture works best when it’s not bolted on, but woven into the heart of school life — including the spaces where reading happens. Get in touch to find out more about Literacy Wall Art and how it can fuel literacy in your school.
