We designed Maths Wall Art for Heathlands School.
Heathlands School is the largest deaf school in the UK. The school offers a Total Communication approach to education.
This incorporates British Sign Language, Sign Supported English and spoken English. Heathlands School is based in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and provides an outstanding education to deaf children aged 3-16. We designed Maths Wall Art to inspire learning in this core curriculum subject. Images, colour and bold text make the design easy to see and understand.
We worked closely with the team at the school to ensure the designs would appeal to all pupils. The design features a range of Maths shapes, equations and terminology. We presented the design in a fun format so pupils want to engage with it. The blue page backdrop works well to support the maths theme. Blue is a calm colour too, so the design helps create a relaxing atmosphere where pupils can engage with the designs at their own pace.
Heathlands School
Since 1975 Heathlands has been providing outstanding education for deaf children and young people. The school’s vision statement “Become the best you can be” is applied to all they do. Their Teachers of the Deaf have specialist training in language development and incorporate this in lesson delivery whatever the subject.
Specialist Speech and Language therapists will undertake assessments of pupils’ needs then design and deliver tailor made intervention programmes. This, combined with their attention to children’s audiological needs and expertise in British Sign Language, is brought together in a Total Communication approach.
Our Maths Wall Art designs complement this communication approach. They offer an accessible and enticing teaching tool that allows pupils to absorb information in the way that suits them. The designs are particularly effective for visual learners. The large format of the design facilitates active learning. Teachers can encourage their pupils to walk alongside the Wall Art and engage with the content at their own pace.
