World Book Day 2025 encourages children to discover reading on their own terms.

The theme for World Book Day 2025 is ‘Read Your Way‘. It aims to encourage children to discover reading in their own style, so it’s something they choose to do for enjoyment.

At Promote Your School we know that children who read for pleasure are happier, healthier and achieve better learning outcomes. We’ve seen this impact first-hand through our work with schools, as we design literacy Wall Art.

Wall Art allows pupils to discover the magic of reading in an active, student-led way. Pupils can walk alongside large images of books, authors and fictional worlds brought to life on their school’s walls. These enthralling designs spark curiosity, build vocabulary and create a genuine interest in reading.

Here are some of our recent literacy Wall Art projects designed to encourage pupils to read their way…

1. Enchanted storybook corridor

We created this mesmerising enchanted storybook corridor for Chapel Hill Primary School in Essex. Designed for primary aged pupils, it brings books to life against a magical woodland backdrop.

Characters and scenes from much loved children’s books add an air of intrigue.

Pupils are drawn to the designs, using their emerging vocabulary to discuss what they can see. And, critically, the design piques their interest in reading from a young age. The nature backdrop brings the wellbeing benefits of the outdoors inside. So pupils feel calm and happy as they discover the joy of reading through the design.

We think this design perfectly encapsulates the theme of World Book Day 2025 – Read Your Way!

2. Must read books

Research shows that children feel reading is something they have to do, rather than something they choose to do (Source: World Book Day).

This is particularly pertinent to Secondary Schools. Pupils have a rich curriculum of setbooks to work through. And many of these books are classics – stories that have stood the test of time, for good reason. They have the potential to inspire and inform pupils, teaching lessons and raising aspirations through fiction.

But many pupils don’t like the idea of being ‘forced’ to read.

So schools like Sir Herbert Leon Academy in Milton Keynes use literacy Wall Art to solve this problem.

Designs, like this ‘must-read books’ artwork, create natural curiosity. We used book spines to create the feeling of an immersive library, books popular amongst secondary aged pupils, classic favourites that have stood the test of time, alongside, key texts from the school’s curriculum to encourage pupils choose their own reading journey from the recommendations.

The images bring interest to the walls and give the books a life of their own. Pupils will want to find out more about the stories depicted on their walls. In this way, a natural interest in books can develop into a lifelong love of reading.

3. An open book

Some of the greatest and most memorable quotes originated in stories. And schools can use these quotes to inspire and motivate pupils in all aspects of their lives.

From overcoming adversity to aspiring for greatness, many storybook characters inspire children to believe in themselves. And to believe in magic!

This beautiful open book design is guaranteed to encourage children to ‘read their way’. It dazzles with fairydust and stars, showcasing characters and scenes from classic stories.

Quotes from popular books show pupils what awaits them within the covers of these great books. So they’ll be eager to open them and find out more.

4. All are welcome

For schools lucky enough to have their own library, the big challenge is to encourage pupils to visit it!

Once again, the best way to achieve this is by sparking curiosity. What lies beyond the doors of the library? There are magical worlds to discover and enchating stories to tell…

Use intriguing images to entice pupils towards the library and you’ll be halfway there. It is very difficult for pupils to walk past the library and not want to find out more. The welcome sign creates an inclusive atmosphere where pupils feels safe and encouraged to join in.

It’s clear that the library is a special place where magical things happen. And everyone is invited…
