Promote Your School once again partnered with The Reading Agency to support their Summer Reading Challenge. The Reading Agency selected Warrington Library Authority at random from a list of all local library authorities across the UK. We donated a literacy Wall Art project they could use as an incentive for schools to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge.
St Thomas C.E Primary School in Stockton Heath had the highest percentage of pupils in the area who took part in the Summer Reading Challenge last summer. A whopping 59% of pupils at the school read as many books as possible over the summer holidays. Pupils could visit their local library or log their reading records online to earn badges and rewards.
Once Warrington Libraries had selected the school as their winner, they passed the details on to Lisa Savage, Director at Promote Your School. Lisa managed the completion of their prize; a bespoke literacy Wall Art project to encourage reading for pleasure.
Now, we’re delighted to share the completed project with you!
We have partnered with The Reading Agency for three consecutive years to support their Summer Reading Challenge. And we’re delighted that our Wall Art donation remains a great incentive for the campaign.
Each year, The Reading Agency selects a local library authority at random, and they can use the Wall Art incentive however they wish. In this case, Warrington rewarded the highest level of participation in the challenge. This is a fitting prize that complements the aims of the campaign as literacy Wall Art is proven to fuel literacy and encourage reading for pleasure.
We offered the prize as a bespoke project, including design, print and installation.
“The chance to win Literacy Wall Art is a great incentive for schools to participate in The Summer Reading Challenge.” – Chris Rushbrook, Programme Manager at The Reading Agency
The design sits on a magical backdrop, bursting with colour and interest. Objects fly from the pages of an open book, to spark curiosity in pupils of all ages. We also added quotes from famous authors to inspire and motivate pupils on their reading journey. The closer pupils look, the more they’ll discover. It’s a natural conversation starter, to help pupils build vocabulary and critical thinking.
St Thomas C.E. Primary School provides an inspirational, safe and caring learning environment to children in Stockton Heath. The school offers a broad and balanced curriculum where literacy plays a key part.
It was wonderful to see such a high level of participation from the school in last year’s Summer Reading Challenge. Over half of all pupils took part, which means a large proportion of pupils chose to spend their summer holidays reading!
No doubt they had plenty of stories to share when they returned to school in September – and now the magic continues with this beautiful literacy Wall Art project to enjoy.
“Thank you for organising our wonderful Wall Art project!
We absolutely love it and the children enjoyed watching the installation process.
Thanks for all your help in its design.” – Vickie Toft, Deputy Head and Year 3 Teacher, St Thomas C.E. Primary School
The design teams worked their magic with images that reflect a specific list of much-loved stories and books selected by pupils and teachers. The list included books enjoyed across every year group, so the final design is one that every child can relate to. Whilst being able to relate to the books they enjoy, the design also allows pupils to escape into their own imaginations and inspires them to choose the books they want to read. It was important for the school to equip pupils with the motivation and encouragement to choose their own reading journeys so they can truly love the books they read.
Every year, thousands of children across the UK take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. Children can earn badges and rewards for reading as many books as possible over the summer. They receive a certificate when they complete the challenge.
Your school can get involved in the challenge too. The Reading Agency website includes a school zone where you can download a free info pack. This pack provides everything you need to help your pupils take part.
You can put up posters around the school and use the free assembly presentation to get pupils excited about the challenge. There are also free activity sheets, author content and other resources. It’s free to take part and all children are welcome.
The Reading Agency is currently running a Winter Challenge to keep kids reading!
Children need to read or listen to 3 books of their choice from 1 December to 20 February. Every child who participates will be entered into a prize draw to win amazing books.
