In Spring, every year, children across the UK wear their pyjamas and spend the day reading for BookTrust’s Pyjamarama.
Promote Your School has supported the campaign for three years. Each year, we donate a free and bespoke literacy Wall Art project, which includes design, print and installation. Every school that registers for Pyjamarama is entered into the prize draw.
Last year’s winning school was Crossacres Primary School. We worked directly with the team there to fulfil their prize and are delighted to share the case study with you.
The motto at Crossacres Primary School is ‘Challenge. Progress. Aspire’ — a phrase that perfectly captures the school’s forward-thinking and enthusiastic approach to learning.
From creating exciting opportunities beyond the classroom to embracing initiatives that bring the school community together, Crossacres is always looking for meaningful ways to inspire its pupils. So it’s no wonder that the school signed up for Pyjamarama last year; a day of fun, dedicated to all things reading related!
Once Crossacres Primary School were chosen as the winners, we contacted the school directly to kickstart their Wall Art project.
First; a site visit to discuss their goals and ideas, and share our experience and advice. We loved walking around the school building and seeing the buzz of activity from happy teachers and pupils. There were loads of spaces to choose from for Wall Art; particularly corridors, stairwells and shared communal areas.
The school chose the main hall as the perfect location for their Wall Art prize. This space sees a lot of footfall and offers a large wall that’s perfect for Wall Art.
We discussed a few ideas and explained that our designers would create the artwork completely bespoke. So, we could tailor the Wall Art to their specifications and preferences.
The school opted for a nature backdrop as the perfect setting for a reading-themed design. This sets the scene perfectly as it creates a calm and serene atmosphere in the large school hall.
Two key themes underpin the design: reading for pleasure and making memories. The children chose one of their favourite books as inspiration and gave the designers a brief that included a wish list of elements that resonated with them and their lives.
We celebrated the stories they love and the memories they make with friends and family to add meaning and impact to the design. These included places they visit for school trips; Chester Zoo, Quarry Bank Mill and Blackpool Zoo. So we included these specific places within a large signpost, alongside fictional landmarks from their favourite stories. A caravan and aeroplane are a nod to holidays and a spirit of adventure – both present within stories and the families’ own lives. The rest of the objects were chosen to reflect the stories they enjoy and to inspire them to pick up a book to escape or be the creator of their own stories!
The quotes were also selected by the school. They connect the magic of reading to the memories made during childhood – holidays, day trips and time spent in nature echo the themes children read about in their favourite stories.
We loved tailoring the design to images and messages that mean a lot to the whole school community. This helps pupils connect with the Wall Art, feel inspired by the magic of stories and appreciate the importance of family – all within one powerful design.
Literacy Wall Art is very popular with schools. In fact, it’s one of our most requested Wall Art styles.
This is because it can bring the life-changing magic of reading to life on your walls!
There’s a myriad of ways we can approach the design. And our bespoke process allows us to perfectly capture your requirements, then apply our experience and expertise to turn your vision into striking designs.
Popular types of Literacy Wall Art include;
We first worked with BookTrust back in 2021. Cressida Cowell’s ‘Life-changing libraries’ project introduced fully kitted out libraries to six schools in the UK. And we donated bespoke literacy Wall Art to each school.
The campaign proved hugely successful and showed the huge impact of a school library. BookTrust later published a full report, including stats and facts about the importance of a library for every school. Since then, we’ve supported BookTrust on other initiatives, including their annual Great Books Guide and the Pyjamarama campaign.
Literacy is a cause that’s very important to us as we believe it underpins learning and wellbeing in all pupils. So we’re delighted to showcase this latest project and continue our work with our literacy partners.
Keep an eye out for this year’s Pyjamarama campaign. We’ll share details of our involvement and this year’s literacy Wall Art prize soon…
