Treetops School is a specialist school in Grays, Essex.

Part of the Treetops Learning Community, Treetops School offers a warm, caring and approachable environment for pupils with SEND.

With this in mind, the school asked us to create a beautiful Jurassic inspired design for their library. Nature is the perfect backdrop for the space as it creates a sense of calm, where pupils can rest and regulate. The Wall Art offers a perfect balance of stimulation, so pupils feel engaged, without feeling overwhelmed.

Some children seek movement, colour and sensory input. Others need stillness and reduced stimulation to feel settled. Creating clearly defined spaces for both ends of that spectrum helps pupils manage their energy and return to learning, ready to focus.

The school library can serve as a refuge for pupils at SEND schools. It’s a quiet place where pupils can escape the ordinary school day and enter a world of endless possibilities. Books offer escapism, so the reading environment should feel safe, welcoming and magical. This Jurassic theme works particularly well because it combines action and adventure with a calm nature based setting. In this way the space caters to all pupils’ needs.

Arrows and signage are integrated into the design to help pupils navigate the area. Book shelves can be hidden behind sliding doors, adorned with Wall Art, for an immersive effect.
