Five Acre Wood School – Mini beasts corridor
We designed a Mini Beasts Corridor for Five Acre Wood School.
Five Acre Wood School caters for young people aged 4-19 who have profound, severe and complex learning difficulties. The school has a team of NHS specialist school nurses on site. They also have their own Therapy Team (Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists), Counsellor, Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner, Social Worker and TEAM, who work with parents to support learning.
Other professionals visit the school to support our pupils, such as Visual Impairment specialists. We designed a Mini Beasts Corridor to add colour and interest to the walls. The nature based design offers the perfect balance of stimulation for SEND pupils. It’s a sensory-friendly design that gives the entire area a welcoming feeling.
Mini Beasts Corridor
Five Acre Wood School is a stimulating and safe learning community. Staff and parents work together to nurture and maximise the potential of each and every individual, and celebrate their achievements. Firm foundations and strong partnerships provide the platform for dynamic, challenging and personalised learning pathways, preparing students for their life journey.
The physical learning environment is a key aspect of this approach. So the Mini Beasts Corridor adds value beyond merely making the walls look nice. In fact, the Wall Art designs offer SEND-friendly visuals, rooted in nature, to create a calm and positive atmosphere for all pupils.
Pupils can spend time exploring the designs and discovering hidden beasts each time they look. Due to the size of the designs, all pupils can interact with the corridor, regardless of pupils’ disabilities, mobility or learning needs.
SEND-friendly design
Not every pupil experiences the school day in the same way.
Some children seek movement, colour and sensory input. Others need stillness and reduced stimulation to feel settled. Creating clearly defined spaces for both ends of that spectrum helps pupils manage their energy and return to learning, ready to focus. Gentle colours, nature-inspired themes and uncluttered compositions help lower stress levels and create a softer atmosphere. Instead of demanding attention, these designs soothe it.
The mini beast based design sparks curiosity and inspires critical thinking. So the learning environment becomes a place of discovery and exploration, as well as a base for rest and regulation.
Wall Art for SEND pupils
