Creative Summer Holiday Activities for All Ages

Summer creativity

These Creative Summer Holiday Activities will spark imagination and fuel creativity in all ages.

At the start of the year, we talked about the many benefits of creativity. We discussed how to make creativity visible and purposeful across schools. Our blog post also explained how to reinforce strategic priorities through space and design, as much as through policy and planning.

With the Summer holidays fast approaching, we’re keen to continue the theme of creativity throughout the break. So, we’ve put together a list of Creative Summer Holiday Activities. These activities are suitable for all ages. So, perhaps you can encourage your pupils, or own children, to take on this creativity challenge!

As creatives ourselves, we have a strong focus on creativity and appreciate it being prioritised. We are excited to support schools in focusing on creativity in their learning environments and help realise the positive outcomes it delivers for learners.

Check out our list below and keep an eye on our social media channels as we share ideas throughout the Summer holidays…

Get creative, outdoors

Spending time in nature is proven to improve mental health and overall wellbeing. So, when you combine nature with creativity, you can enjoy far reaching benefits to your health, happiness and wellbeing. According to Szczepanski et al. (2006), learning outdoors can increase students’ overall motivation too.

There are loads of ways to get creative in nature during the Summer holidays;

Go with the flow

Studies suggest that entering the flow state can enhance our performance in activities such as sports or music, and improve our creativity and wellbeing. The late Hungarian psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, who first coined the term flow, went as far as to call it “the secret to happiness”.

There are loads of ways to achieve this state of ‘flow’ through creativity. Any time you get fully immersed in a creative task, hit your rhythm and forget about everything around you, you’re in the flow.

Flow slows your heart rate and breathing and can leave you feeling relaxed and restored. So your nervous system can regulate and build a whole body sense of calm.

Summer Holiday Activities that encourage the state of flow include;

Learn a new language

Learning a new language acts as a full-body workout for the brain. It triggers neuroplasticity—strengthening connections across multiple areas—which directly enhances your memory, sharpens your focus, and increases cognitive reserve. (Source: Cambridge University Press)

So, why not spend your Summer learning a new language?

You could even go one step further and pick a country you’d like to visit. Then, as a family, research interesting facts about that country; foods, people, places to visit and the language. It will be as good as visiting it in person!

This is a hugely creative task that is perfect for all ages. And it will keep brains learning as you all soak up facts and information about your chosen destination.

The year of creativity

At Promote Your School, we believe that the case for increasing creativity in schools has never been clearer, and the need has never been stronger.

Inside the classroom and out, there are always opportunities to add a touch of creativity to all you do. Even before you engage in creative endeavours, you can shape your immediate environment to set the tone for creative thinking and expression.

Visual prompts, colour, messages and images can all spark creativity. That’s why nature offers such a powerful backdrop, with its colours, sounds, sights, textures and scents. You can recreate this sensory experience at home. Introduce colourful pictures, furnishings and photos to enhance your visual environment. Add scents and sounds for a truly immersive sensory experience. Then, you’ll be able to engage fully in your creative activities.

We wish you all a wonderful Summer break – a great rest and a healthy dose of creativity!
