We designed a large Map of Scotland for St Rose of Lima Primary School.
St Rose of Lima Primary School in Glasgow offers a Catholic education within a caring, concerned, Christian community. The school celebrates and nurtures the diverse cultures and faiths of all learners. Pupils enjoy a welcoming, safe and nurturing Catholic environment that respects the diversity of all.
We created a bespoke Map of Scotland for a wall below a school stairwell. Previously an unused wall space, the area has now come to life!
We highlighted famous Scottish heroes whose inventions made a big impact on society. Each person is linked to a location on the map, showing their local origin. This is bound to build a sense of pride in pupils. And show that they too can make a difference in the wider world.
Scotland on the map
Map Wall Art sparks curiosity and inspires pupils to ‘think like a Geographer’. Children of all ages can use large visual Maps to get a sense of their place in the world.
This design is entirely personalised to St Rose of Lima’s requirements. They wanted a map that was centered on their local area of Glasgow, with the wider area of Scotland expanding from the centre.
We included the school’s logo to show their location. This gives pupils a sense of relativity, showing their place against the wider backdrop of Scotland. This is useful as it introduces cartography as a concept. And, it acts as a learning tool, helping pupils remember key dates and names related to inventions they’ll learn about as part of the curriculum.
Wall Art in Scotland
Maps offer the opportunity to draw pupils into the wider world – connecting them to the natural and man-made elements that keep the world turning. We use lots of colour and images in our wall map designs as these appeal to pupils of all ages.
This design has turned a stairwell into a learning opportunity. So, pupils will connect learning to life and feel inspired to follow in the footsteps of Scottish people who made a difference in the world. We featured Glasgow’s skyline at the base of the design. This creates visual interest and adds another layer of depth to the design. Some large text on the left discusses Scotland’s legacy of technological achievement – hugely inspirational for pupils.
Our process
We created the design in-house and bespoke to the school’s requirements. The school were inspired by similar projects we had completed for other schools. But as always, we created an entirely unique design for the school.
Initially, we visited the school and met the team to discuss their goals and preferences. This also allowed us to measure up the available wall space so we could put together an accurate quote. With a clear brief in mind, the school detailed what they wanted to include in the Map design, including the list of inspirational people to feature.
We shared the artwork with the school for feedback and once they were happy with the final designs, they approved these. Then, we printed the artwork on highly durable vinyl, which will last many years in this busy stairwell. Pupils can now enjoy their new Map of Scotland for many years to come. And they can celebrate the legacy of Scottish heroes every day – and perhaps even follow in their footsteps one day…
