Values displays for schools are an effective tool to celebrate and promote a school’s ethos and identity. You can reinforce your values visually in key touchpoints around your building, so they’re front of mind for pupils and teachers.
Learning about core values can help students develop traits and beliefs that will support them throughout their lives. They can apply these values to learning, in future careers and relationships, and as they become responsible and ethical citizens of the world. Values displays can also help create a positive and inspiring learning environment where all pupils feel safe and included.
Here we’ll share 5 examples of values displays for schools. These are based on real projects we’ve completed for schools.
We designed this striking values wall for Kents Hill Junior School. It’s a great example of how to connect your values with your curriculum, so they underpin learning.
This particular values display has pride of place in the school’s reception area. So it welcomes pupils, teachers, parents and visitors as soon as they arrive, reinforcing the school’s ethos at the same time. We branded the design with the school’s logo and colours. This helps build a sense of identity and brings the school’s values to life against a professional looking backdrop.
Adding a strapline of “Your future starts here” unifies the message and relates back to the school’s motto, “For today – for tomorrow – for the future”. So it complements the school’s values and creates continuity, offline and online.
The design bursts to life with images that relate to the curriculum, learning, school experience and the wider world. This demonstrates the school’s broad and balanced curriculum. And it inspires pupils to consider how their education can unlock opportunities in the future. It’s a hugely engaging design that is sure to inspire, motivate and unite the school community.
Downside Primary School took a unique, and inclusive, approach to their values display. They involved pupils in the process!
Pupils were tasked with creating pencil drawings for each of their school’s values to show what they meant to them. Staff then judged the images and chose those they felt best represented the values. We used the selected drawings as the basis for our designs when creating this engaging visual display.
This approach means that the design is truly bespoke to the school. And it gives pupils a sense of pride and ownership over their values. Displaying values visually makes them accessible and meaningful to all pupils, including younger pupils or those who are mastering the school’s primary language.
Visual symbols and icons are instantly recognisable across the school. And, they can be used in other learning materials too. This embeds the values in daily life so they become part of the school’s DNA.
Role models can inspire children to try their best and aim high in all they do. So, we often feature inspirational people in our values displays for schools.
There are a few ways to use inspirational people in our designs;
We designed this inspirational people values wall for Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School. It shows how to feature inspirational people in your designs, using colour and symbols for extra impact.
This sweet, bee-themed design is ideal for young pupils at Hampton Primary School.
Woodland characters present the school’s values in a fun, gentle and age appropriate way. The entire design feels warm and welcoming, and the bees build consistency to help pupils recognise and remember their values.
We know that spending time in nature can improve wellbeing. So the nature backdrop creates a sense of calm in the design. Soft colours and a nature inspired backdrop create a positive learning environment in which pupils can feel safe, happy and ready to learn.
We created this values based design for George Stephenson High School in Newcastle. The school is named after the famous railway pioneer of the same name. And everyone in the school community is proud of their heritage and aspirational namesake. So we used the school’s railway heritage as a focus for their values display.
Branded with the school’s bold colours, the values wall sits against an engineering themed backdrop – a nod to their heritage. We used colour, images, text and symbols to bring the values to life. In this way the values are easy to understand and relatable to pupils, while the backdrop instills a sense of pride at the school’s rich history.
The end result is a powerful design that celebrates core values, heritage, pride and community.
